Eastern Mediterranean Opisthobranchia Project

Project Overview:

With this project, the species distribution of Opisthobranchia of Turkish Mediterranean Coast will be determined and scientific strategies for the conservation of their habitats will be outlined. A co-operation and communication is also aimed among the scientists studying on Opisthobranchia, especially from the Eastern Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt and Cyprus.

The studies on the Opisthobranchia in Turkey and other Eastern Mediterranean countries are quite insufficient. The distribution of the Opisthobranchia species of Turkish coasts, which are represented by too many families and genera, will be determined for the first time with the strategies for the conservation and improvement of their habitats. A more conservative and more efficient approach will be put into action with this scientific project, on the underwater eco-tourism activities which are becoming more popular in recent years. Thus, important contributions to both local economy and protection of natural resources will be provided.

Project Status:

EMOP is started in March 2004. Initial field surveys had been carried out in Fethiye Bay with some observations on the coasts of Antalya, Northern Cyprus and Gulf of Iskenderun. Field surveys are now being conducted in Aegean and Mediterranean coasts of Turkey.
